98 Ford F-150 Jerking when driving

I have a 98 Ford F150, V8 Triton with an Auto Transmission, 143,345 miles and for the past 6 months have had the check engine light on. I was told by an auto parts store that it was a bad egr valve and then a misfire on the spark plugs. I replaced the egr valve, spark plugs, spark plug wires and one of the coil caps and still the check engine light doesn't turn off. Now while driving around 60-70 mph the truck jerks back and forth almost like it's slipping. Feeling it needed a Pro to check it out. I took it to 2 auto shops and was told two different diagnosis. One told me the computer showed a 401 insufficient EGR flow and would need the Throttle Bottle intake cleaned, dpse replaced, and the B&G induction ports cleaned around $500. The other shop told me that they were getting two transmission codes and that it was the transmission direct drum and gears that were starting to fail, and would need a complete rebuild($2500.00) even road tested it and experienced my symptoms. My wife and I are at a lost since they are two very different diagnoses. Not sure if the first shop cleared the first error codes and that's why the second shop didn't detect them. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Need to know what codes are n the computer. If you have to get a code reader to check them yourself, it may be benefical. We can provide a fair amount of insight at the very least.

My feeling is a bad dpfe sensor.

Thank you for your quick response first of all. Is this code reader something that I can pickup at a parts store or does it require a specialty store and if so, which do you suggest?

A parts store should have an OBD II code reader. You can try unlplegging the DPFE sensor and see if it changes anything.

Wow! That is an awesome illustration and so is the attached website. Thank you so much. I am also so glad I found this forum, it's great to have this information available to consumers. I know we will never replace our mechanics it will give us an edge so we won't be taken for a ride. Thanks once again.

Thank you again for that awesome info. I took it to a firend of mine that had a code reader and he said I was getting a misfire on cylinder #2. I replaced that spark plug last Saturday, and don't want to get too confident, but the problem seems to have gone away. No more, jerking/slipping while driving and I never realized that is was missing out, because it's much smoother while idling. I will be replacing the whole set of plugs this coming weekend. Thanks again for your insight, that led me directly to the problem.
