Engine Performance problem
1999 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Recently I got 2 trouble codes for my explorer, Fuel Control Mixture Lean (Bank 1) and Fuel Control Mixture Lean (Bank 2), I replaced the O2 sensors both upstream and downstream and everything was good for about 2 weeks the today the ck engine light came on again and the same 2 codes, could this be an EGR Valve? Or somthing else.

No I don't think it is. This happen on my Mustang and what fixed the problem was to clean the mass air flow unit. So get some mass air flow cleaner and clean it then clear the codes and see if they come back. Thanks

So far so good cleaning the maf sensor seemed to work. After removing the neg batt cable and cleaning the maf sensor with maf sensor cleaner. Once finished replaced maf and put neg back on batt, started the car and the light went out. Last time it was out for 2 weeks after changing out O2 sensors maybe this will do it for good this time.

Thanks carpro's I will be using you guys again if needed!

You may need to replace the upstream O2 sensor on that bank if it has been done recently it may be a warranty part, give me the code number and I will check to see what all the causes are and we will walk through them ok.

The code this time is P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2), It has been less than a month since replacing both the upstream and downstream O2 Sensors when the original codes were as folllows, P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1) and P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2) about 2 weeks went by and on a cold morning the same 2 codes came up, This is when I wrote you guys and cleaned the MAF sensor by your suggestion and it worked, all was well for another week and again on a very cold morning this time it only gave the code P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2) so this is where were at now

Ok here are all the problems that can cause this code to come up and if you would let me know what you have and haven't checked so we can through the ones that you haven't check ok. Fuel system problems, egr problems, intake vacuum leak or leaking vacuum hoses, oil level too high, dirty air filter, pcv valve restricted. So get back to me with what you have and haven't checked and we will go through them one at a time ok. Do you have a digital multi meter? Thanks

Ok, I have checked the vacuum lines with the engine running spraying each of them with throttle body cleaner and the idle stays the same so the vacuum lines are ok. I have not cleaned or replaced the egr system yet, neither have I cleaned the pcv valve I will do that in the morning when I get to work first thing. Air filter is new just replaced and the oil level is ok where it is supposed to be on the dipstick. Have not touched the fuel filter but have used injector cleaner about every 3rd tank of gas which increased my mileage. And yes I do have a digital multimeter. And just to update the light has been off now for 3 days after resetting it.

Thanks again

Ok good and if you want to test the coolant sensor or anything just let me know and we will go there. So when you get done with the cleaning let me know how it goes and as for the fuel filter if it has been more then 2 yrs sense you have replaced it then you should for maintenance reasons as for the fuel additive I use seafoam and it works great. Thanks and let me know how it goes and if we need to go further just let me know.
