By chance did you remember to remove the small metal lock that keeps the lock nut from turning?

On the top of the spindle, you will see a groove that is machined into the spindle. There is a small metal lock that keeps the locknut in place. It is hard to spot, and not easy to get a hold of. It usually hides a bit inside of that groove. You can usually remove it with a magnet, but you need to make sure it is loose by wiggling the locknut back and forth to make sure it is not bound by pressure from the locknut.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
