High Rev at Idling

I have a Ford Escort 1997, manual, 122,000 miles. Lately the car has started idling at high revs. The problem is also observed whenever I press the clutch for shifting gears. What could be the reason for this?

It's probably the Idle Air Control Valve or Mass Air Flow Sensor. Is your check engine light on? If it is, get the computer scanned for trouble codes. You can get this done for free at an Autozone or some other auto parts store.
