95 escort shakes and stalls when I put it in gear. I already changed the fuel filter. Stays running if I put it in neutral. When I get it going and I caome to stop sign it cuts off, starts back up after a few cranks.

(1) Check vacuum lines
disconnect vacuum hose at EGR valve and connect vacuum gauge to hose
disconnect idle air
start engine and accelerate engine to 2000 -2400 RPM and release throttle
repeat 8-10 times and check for consistent response
with engine at normal operating temp vacuum should raise above 15in Hg and return to zero when throttle is release

(2) is the engine running smooth at idle and in neutral? Check ignition wires and coil
(3) I don't like the diesel sound effect you are talking about and it need to be investigated check all the basics
