Engine Performance problem
2000 Ford Escort Automatic

My car dies almost as soon as I take my foot off the gas. It doesn't seem to matter what the RPMs are either. My check engine light is on, but that has been on a while and this problem just started yesterday. It seems like it started after I filled my gas tank up. Yesterday it was only dying when I first started the car and it was cold. Now it does it all the time. Any suggestions? I am hoping to do this as cheap as possible for now at least.

I had the car scanned just a few min ago. Two codes were shown. The first saying I need a new thermostat, which I already knew. The second says that hole 3 is missing. I am not sure which is hole three but I started the car a removed the plug wires one by one. The one on the far side towards the passenger side is the only one that killed the car when pulled. The other three didn't seem to make a difference. I am hoping a tune up will fix that problem. I am assuming it would at least help the idle problem as well if not fix it. I know some about cars, as much ad I could pick up from my ex husband anyway. I figured I might as well give it a shot. I do not have tools but if anyone could tell me what size socket I need I can go get that one and an extension and wratchet so I can give this a try.

Hole no.3 is the cylinder no.3 check the plug for no.3 -dunno what socket size -do you have a repair manual, if not you need one to tackle this problem, it can get complicated down the road and you need references for a guide.
