1995 Ford Contour Wants to stall/ Idle seems too low

My car is wanting to stall lately, noticed the rpm at idle is about 500 rpm is this right or should it be set higher? Also running a little rough and wanting to stall out at idle, any suggestions?

Clean out the idle air control valve and see what happens

Whats the best way to clean it? Repair guide says not to clean.
