Blend door actuators

Hi all,

I replaced both HVAC blend door actuators on my car because of the dreaded clicking noise upon startup. It has manual A/C, no climate control. I replaced the driver side one (mode selector) first, but the knocking continued. That's when I replaced the passenger side one behind the glove box (controls re-circulation outside/inside air). The clicking sound was gone. But now it only sends the air through the defrost setting. Fan speed is fine, temperature can be regulated fine. A/C is still ice cold. I'm assuming the actuators need to be reinitialized. I tried pulling the fuse and disconnecting the battery. No go. I found a way to get codes out of the HVAC system by doing a sequence where the light on re-circulation button pulses out the numbers. I have codes 22, 31, 32 and 33. I am at wits end. I do not want to pay the dealer a ton of money to fix this. Please help! Thank you in advance!

Again, I can't thank you guys enough, that was very helpful. I think I narrowed it down. After I removed the passenger side actuator I took it apart and found the broken gear tooth that caused the clicking noise. But I also took note that it was really just a motor and gears in there. This is the one that controls the re-circulation door, which really could either be open or closed. There's no in between. I then carefully took the original actuator from the driver side apart. This is the one that controls the mode door. (Floor, vent, defrost.) Low and behold, this one had a circuit board that reads the motor inside it. When you think that this probably gives feedback to the body computer as to the position of the mode door, it makes sense. So this weekend, I will remove the new driver's side actuator and transfer the circuit board to it. I will let you know how it works but I am 92% positive that this is it. It would be nice if Ford included a warning sheet in the new part telling you that you need to transfer this circuit board. But then again, they'd rather have you bring it to a dealer for repair. It's also amazing how they engineered one part for both sides to save money but just add a circuit board to the driver's side actuator to make it do a different job. Anything to save a buck. Seriously I thank you, you guys are great. I will spread your website to any of my friends who need help. I hope my story can help others as well. I will confirm with you after my weekend installation.

OK, last post. It finally worked. The old mode door actuator had the circuit board, the new one didn't. When I took off the new part to transfer the circuit board, I noticed the mounting loop was broken from installing it and removing it. (Good quality replacement part, right?) So I just took the new gears from the new unit and transferred them to the old unit and kept the circuit board in the old actuator. Bingo, the air comes out from wherever you want it to! My picture shows the old actuator on the left and the new one on the right (with the broken loop!) A dead giveaway is counting the pins on the actuator connector. If you only see two pins, it doesn't have the circuit board in it. If you didn't give the me the detail on the error code, it wouldn't have been fixed. So I thank you guys so much!
