I just bought this 1996 dodge ram and the gas hand will show full some times and empty sometime. What could the problem be any ideas would help

Check the wires going into the sending unit in the fuel tank. My guess is a bad ground for the sending unit, but it is possible that the float in the tank is bad, or their is a connection issue at the insturment panel.
