Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Dodge Ram V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi,

My Ram truck isn't starting. The problem seems to be
the starter but I need confirmation because this is my first Dodge.
I backed my truck into my driveway and turned the engine off but then almost immediately I needed to start it up again but it wouldn't turn over. It feel like I'm pushing the key through worn gears and I go all the way through the turn and there is no resistance. At the very end of the turn all I have is electrical come on. Dashboard electrical.
Any ideas? Tests I have to do?

Based on your description, it doesn't sound like the starter. If there is no resistance when you turn the switch, it sounds like either the electrical switch has gone bad or is loose, or the linkage that runs from the tumbler to the ignition switch is disconnected or bent which is unlikely. Here is what I want you to try. If the dashboard lights come on in the run position, have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire on the starter. You should have 12+ volts. If you do, then remove the starter (disconnect battery first) and have it bench tested at a parts store. THey will do it for free in most cases. If there is no power, we need to work backwards from that point.

Let me know what you find and we'll go from there.
