No gauges

I have a 97 dodge neon DOHC with 87,000
My question is this. I just performed a engine swap that went pretty well. Everything plugged back up and no unidentified loose wires. Started the vehicle and none of the gauges in the dash work. Looked at the fuse box and there is a fuse for gauges but that was ok. Where should I start? Must also say this vehicle has not been run for 3 years.

Noticed the other day that the gauges started working. Worked all day and couold not get them to stop working. Came back a few days later and back to no gauges. Seems like a ground but cant find any loose grounds. Checked body with meter and it has a good ground. Any SUGGESTIONS
