When I fill the fuel tank on my 1995 Dodge Intrepid the fuel gauge reads fine until it gets down to 1/2 a tank. At this point the Fuel gauge starts dropping sporadically and the low fuel light comes on and then the gauge goes back to normal. It will do this several times a minute until you put gas in it to raise the level above 1/2 a tank. I've had the car for 10 years and This problem just started a couple of months ago. I put fuel system cleaner in the tank to see if that would help, but the problem continues. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi:
The problem deals with the fuel float in the tank. It is part of the fuel pump and this is not uncommon. The resister built into the fuel float fails causing things like you described. The only way to repair the problem is to replace the fuel pump which is an expensive job. If you can live with it, let it go. It won't hurt anything other than being a pain.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Joe
