The hot coolant comes out of the engine and into the upper radiator and back into the engine through the lower hose. Leave the lower hose connected. Disconnect the upper. Put the water hose in the radiator filler neck and start the water. Then start the engine. Water flows through the radiator, engine, and out to the ground. After you have flushed it with the engine off you should run water through a few different spots and make sure the water coming out is clean. Especially check the heater core. You can find two lines one in one out on the passenger side fire wall about the same size as a garden hose. Gunk often builds up here and can be hard to flush out.
