1984 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Manual ?34000 miles

I was driving my truck up a hill in 4th gear and she was losing power, thought of going to 3rd but instead I gave her more gas..... she died. Tried to roll of and she started then died. I got her to a gas station where I tried in vain to get it running. She will start up, run very rough and die. I checked the carb which was in bad shape and saw the fuel line was not good either. I replaced the leaking fuel line from the pump up, still no go. Bought a rebuilt carb off of my brother and still it would start and run very rough for a few seconds and die, almost like she was flooding out. If you tried a few times in a row she would sputter and backfire. Thought maybe she jumped time so we marked the distributor and turn it a bit to and fro and still no go. Bought a new timing chain and gears, took her apart and opened her up to see she has a fairly new double roller that is in great shape. Lined her up with TDC and all seems good. The rotor turns with the cam and when we saw that she seemed to be in time we took the distributer out to look and see if the gears were stripping and no, the distributor looks bran new, not even any discoloration. The cap looked a little rough but not bad enough to cause me the problems I’m having. I also have one bad spark plug wire, but once again she should still run.

I will take back the timiing set tonight and get a distributor cap and try that, does any one else have any ideas on why it would quit running just like that?
