Car starts well only when it has been sitting for several hours. Otherwise, I have to crank it two or three times for several seconds, and when it starts, it runs roughly for several seconds and smells strongly of raw gas. Also, when you shut it off, several seconds later the gas tank goes THUNK.

You need to use a gage and check fuel pressure. Check for correct pressure and see if it bleeds off? If there is a fuel leak into the engine, either injector/s or regulator, it can make a hot engine hard to start. After it sits for a while, the extra fuel evaporates.
