Hello,
As I was driving down the interstate today, my truck started down shifting like I was pulling something heavy. I pulled off the exit and my truck was running really rough. To the point it wanted to die unless I gave it a little gas.
I pulled the shifter into first and limped along to the nearest dealer. When I got out I could smell hot tranny fluid but none was leaking below.
When this happened, there was a very loud squealling noise coming from under the truck. Ideas?

Is the trans fluid full? Is it clean or does it appear burnt and dark in color?

I did not get a chance to check, it was zero degrees outside. Do you think low fluid could cause this? I will feel very foolish if that is what it is.

Don't feel foolish. Lets just hope that is all it is. And yes, low fluid can cause the trans to disengage, slip.

When you get a chance, let me know what you find.

Will do, I need to run up to where it is early Monday morning. I will find out and let you know.

If I do need to replace the transmission, do you have any recommended places to purchase a rebuilt? I've been searching online and found a couple websites that actually sell rebuilds and will ship.

Thanks.

I don't know of any specific places. Have you checked any nationally recognized parts stores?

Dealer called today. The problem was not the transmission, it was failed catalytic converters. Apparently they caused enough back pressure to rob the engine from enough power to run, making it downshift to keep going.

Good news is that no transmission needed, bad news is the package is going to cost me $1300.

Thanks for the feedback!

Well, that is less than the transmission. However, if you can do the work yourself, you should be able to get the converter for under 400.00.

Just a thought. If you need help, let me know.
