i have an 89 gmc s15 and it cranks over but will not start. if i spray some starting fluid into the throttle body it will start and i can keep it running by hitting the peddle, but it sputters and cuts out when driving.i replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs,i would like to know some info so i dont have to buy all kinds of parts to see if they will fix it. my guess is a fuel pump

Check the fuel pressure to nail the fuel pump. Pump don't come On for 2secs while key is in run position-look for power at pump connector while engine is being crank. No power there check the fuel pump relay. No power to relay check the PCM>
