SOMETIMES THE FUEL GAUGE TRIES TO WORK. IT SHOWS FULL WHEN FILLED BUT THE GAUGE NEEDLE WILL SUDDENLY GO TO EMPTY WITH OUT WARNING. EVEN WHEN FULL. VERY ERRATIC. SHOWS EITHER FULL OR EMPTY NO IN BETWEEN?

My 2000 S-10 needed a new fuel sending unit for the same issues you are experiencing.

Yes it will require removal of the tank, and you ought to empty it first.
