Can a leaking intake gasket cause the car to over heat?

It certainly can. In fact it's quite common on that vehicle. The intake gaskets leak coolant at the coolant ports and when it has lost enough it will overheat.
You want o be real care with that too. It can also leak into the engine and into the crankcase which can cost you a motor.
