1998 Chevy Malibu Gearshifter locked

Shifter is hard to move. I was told there is a switch that once you step on the brake the shifter is able to move. Where is the switch and how hard is it to get to.

If your shifter is in between the seats it is under the cover plate in front of the shifter asmb, if its in the stering column then it is in there where the shifter cable connects to the shifter hope this helps lsauto
