A few days ago, this car went from cool to hot in moments. No steam etc. I put more coolant into the car and the level is good. It has not gone to overheat levels since then, but the dial does flip back and forth to sometimes over the median mark. Does this sound like I have a thermostat that needs replacing?

Hello,

If your engine actually does not overheat and the temperature gauge just fluctuates back and forth.
Then it is probably the coolant temperature sensor that is faulty. It is just producing wrong signal to the gauge.

I have attached the temperature sender diagrams with replacement procedure.

Please let me know of any questions.

Thank you.
