2002 Chevy Impala over heating

my car over heated on me. My heater wouldnt blow hot air to try and take some of the way from the motor. And when I was able pull over and turn me car off and look under the hood there was lots of white smoke and these metal tube like things were glow bright fire hot. What does this mean

You may have had a previous coolant leak and the coolant got low enough that the thermostat didn't open thus causeing the overheating and lack of heat in the car.

Or the coolant fan may have become inoperable causing the overheating.
