1997 cavalier wont start

i have a 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2L engine, 138 000 km that wont start. it worked fine one day then the next time i tried to start it it started then died and all of the dash lights came on. the car only starts with a code reader plugged into the car. as well when the code reader is unplugged the a/c does not work.
any suggestions??

Does youre car have any trouble codes?. Have youre checked the charging status of youre battery and alternator?. How long has youre car had a tune up? Fuel filter been changed?. Has youre fuel pump been pressured tested?.

Have you checked to see if you have good ground on battery,body,and engine??
