1997 Cavalier wont start

I have a 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2L engine, 138 000 km that wont start. It worked fine one day then the next time I tried to start it it started then died and all of the dash lights came on. The car only starts with a code reader plugged into the car. As well when the code reader is unplugged the a/c does not work.
any suggestions?

Does youre car have any trouble codes. Have youre checked the charging status of youre battery and alternator. How long has youre car had a tune up? Fuel filter been changed. Has youre fuel pump been pressured tested.
