2002 Chevy Avalanche Tailgate Latch

I am attempting to replace broken handle on tailgate. Seems simple but, I removed bolts and cable connections. Not enough room to bring out of opening? Does anyone know of trick I am missing. 2002 Chevy avalanche.

If you removed the cables, it should fit. Remember, it went in there, and honestly, there is no trick to it.

I went to body shop at dealer and he printed off instructions for latch replacement. To replace latch tailgate spoiler must be removed for clearance. That was a whole different story. I did get latch in and it works, was unable to figure out how to get spoiler off so ended up using brute force. Just lucky didn't break latch or hand. Thanks for input and I would realyy be interested in GM's detailed instructions for removing spoiler. Bad design as far as I can tell. Wish I had took picture to upload.

Sorry, I was unaware of the spoiler. Also, I have no detailed picture of the handle or removal. I have always done what you did.
