Is there a way to check the code without an odbi tested? My old ford Taurus I was able to turn the key a few times and could see what the code was. Can something like this be done on my vehicle listed above? Light is solid but the car runs fine, starts fine and shifts fine.

Hello, I'm Danny.

To answer your question; no, you can't jumper the port like old OBD1 systems in the diagnostic terminal to flash codes. You will need to use a scanner or code reader to check for codes. Since you check engine light is on that means a code or codes are stored in your vehicles computer. Here is a tutorial showing how to check fault codes:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Auto parts stores like AutoZone will check codes for free. After you check for your fault codes get back to us with the code information and we can then help properly diagnose any issues your car is having. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

The code is P0400 which is the EGR. It is an electronic EGR and not the vacuum type. I had the same problem last year and I removed the EGR, very easy on my Escape, Gave it a good cleaning and lasted about 9 months. I'll probably try the cleaning again but order one to replace it if the cleaning doesn't work this time.

Hello again.

Sounds good. I've attached picture steps below on how to remove and replace the EGR valve on your Escape but sounds like you already know how to do this. Thanks again for using 2CarPros and we hope you will use our site again in the future when needed.
