I just started having an issue with the ignition when it gets pretty cold outside. I have to wait for about 30-60 seconds in until I start to hear a rapid clicking noise (lasts 2-3 seconds) from the hood, only then the engine will start. If I don’t wait for the clicking noise the engine will crank but not start. My battery is good and alternator seems to be charging the battery well. Any suggestions what this could be? Wiring?

Hi,

Do me a favor. Have someone cycle the switch until the clicking starts. Then, place your hands on the relays in the power distribution box under the hood and see if you can identify which one it clicking. I have a feeling it is the fuel pump relay.

I attached a pic below showing you where the relay is located. See if that is where it comes from. Or, you can switch that relay with a different one in the relay box having the same part number.

If you would rather, here is a link that explains how to test a relay:

Let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply! I checked the relays, and that’s where the clicking noise is coming from. I replaced both the fuel pump and starter relay. But I’m still having the same issue. Nothing looks corroded in the terminals. Should I replace the fuse box?

Hi,

The idea that it happens when cold leads me to believe it isn't the box, but rather a connection.

I have one more relay for you to check. The vehicle is equipped with an automatic shut down relay (ASD). It is in the fuse box as well. Switch it with a different relay with the same part number and see if that makes a difference.

I attached a pic below showing location in the power distribution box.

Do the same as far as checking the connections for this relay as well.

Let me know.
Joe
