1999 Cadillac Deville Gas Guage goes down to 8 gals then Up

My gas only works correctly from Full down to 8 gals of gas. Once it gets to 8 gals the gauge shows more gas and keeps going up showing more gals till it hits Full - and the car is actually out of gas.

How do I get this fixed? Is this a common problem?

Hi:
It sounds like there is a problem with the fuel float. The resister may be going bad. The only problem is it's part of the fuel pump (expensive) and it's in the fuel tank.
