Car won't start

I have a 1996 Buick Regal GS, 112,000 miles, 3.8 liter (3800 Series) and while I was driving the check engine light started flashing and the temperature gauge started to skyrocket. I pulled over to check the radiator and it was empty. I put a gallon of water in it, started it, put it in drive and it coughed out a cloud of smoke (don't know what color 'cause it was at night) then started running sluggish. I pulled over again, put some water in it, and now it won't start.

I was told it may be a bad head gasket. What do you think?

Sounds like it could be. Pull the spark plugs and turn the engine over, look for water coming out of the plug hole/holes. Water doesnt compress, dont try to turn the engine over until the plugs are out or you could do serious damage to the botom end.
