Sounds like old gas. I second starter fluid, and maybe gas cleaner wouldn't hurt either.

Engine Mechanical problem
1983 Buick Lesabre 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic unknow miles

My brother in-law lives 2000 miles away and is having trouble starting his buick. He thinks that it is a 236 V-6 engine. He says it is not firing when it cranks. Does this engine have a coil that may be bad or should he look elsewhere for another problem? He is handicapped with terminal cancer and I am trying to help him solve this problem as quickly and cost effectively as possible.
Thanks,
David Ratliff

He says it is not firing when it cranks. If its cranking over and refuses to start-have someone do below to see if its a fuel or spark problem

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
