The car is in very good condition, but when we come to a complete stop, the car dies out. Could this be the fuel filter, and if so, does it cost a lot to repair?

Welcome to the forum, how long since overall tune-up? Are there any trouble codes? Use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the national brand autostores used to loan a fuel pressure gage. You can call and ask. Pull the iac valve off the throttle-body, see if it has black soot all over it, clean it. Take the throttle-body off and clean it. When going back with iac, the pintle isn't supposed to stick out too far, I can't remember the spec. I'll look it up, if you need it.

When it dies, does it feel like you need to downshift. like your lugging it?
