I'm glad you fixed it. When you said it locked going forward and not in reverse, I had a feeling the caliper was loose or you lost a bolt.

Thanks for using 2carpros. Com and let us know if you have questions in the future.

Replaced rear shoes, adjusted brakes properly (including the parking brake), now both drums get very hot (too hot to touch) after about 10 miles of driving. I'm not sure if they got hot before as I never touched them. Put truck back on lift, rechecked all adjustments - everything normal. Still overheated. Back on lift, pulled drums, inspected installation, backed off self adjusters completely, loosened parking back cable completely. Nothing is dragging or rubbing, but drums still get very hot after a few miles of mixed driving. Axle, (near rear wheel bearing) is cool to the touch, so I assume my bearings are OK (no noise from them anyway.) Backing plate is warm but is much cooler than the drums. First time I've ever seen this! Help!

Hi:
It is normal for the drums to get hot if the brakes are working. If you adjusted them until you got a slight drag (but can still turn the wheel easily) they should be fine. Keep in mind, friction is what stops you so heat is normal. If they are smoking, I would be concerned.

Let me know if you have other questions.

If they are locking up, make sure no grease or brake fluid is getting on them. If they are clean, dry, and not sticking, the proportioning valve is what determines how much pressure goes to them in relation to the rear. However, unless the check ball is stuck in the valve, I wouldn't think they would lock up. Just for the heck of it, try bleeding the brakes to see if that moves the check ball in the prop valve. Do them in the correct order (RR, LR, RF, LF). If that improves the problem, see if it happens again, If it does, replace the proportioning valve.

My Father bought this truck new and I am unsure if it was a 1985 or a 1986. The brakes have always been very touchy. There is very little feel to the brakes and they make the truck something that we would not want to drive in snowy road conditions. Was this a common problem for the 1985/1986 model years? Is there a fix for it or was it just something that was part of the model line?

Wrong master cylinder. Install one with a smaller bore.

Also, someone may have installed larger diameter rear wheel cylinders. There was a service bulletin about installing one size larger wheel cylinders to alleviate rapid front brake pad wear. You could also go two sizes larger if you knew your customer's truck was always heavily loaded, but you had to buy those from a GM dealer. They were not available from Chrysler.

A stuck combination valve can do this too. The metering valve section prevents front brake pad application until the rear shoes have moved out far enough to contact the drums. If the valve is stuck open, the front brakes will apply too soon.
