2005 BMW 525i engine noise while running

Hi I have a 2005 bmw525i it was running fine the night before, parked it and started the folliowng morning, it back fired 3 times, so lou.D that the nieghbors thought there was a explosion.
now it starts, runs rough, and sounds like a popcorn maker in the rear 2 or 3 cylinders, the check ebgine light is on, but my snap-on solus scanner has no communication with the car, all the fuses in the trunk and glove box area are hot.I'm sure I could find the problem easier if I knew what the check engine light discloses but what to do. Has anybody heard of this crazy problem.
