My sons 325i engine is making a chattering sound like metal grating on metal. When we checked the oil to see if there was antifreeze in the oil, the dip stick gave an odor of fuel. We took the oil cap off and could smell a hint of fuel in the valve cover area, is the engine now no good or is it salvageable. It starts with no hesitation at all

Start with changing the oil and filter and inspect the fuel injectors for leakage. The M-20 motors are as tough as any motor out there. You may not have damaged anything, however, I can't hear the motor from cyberspace and if there is something wrong now would be the time to get it repaired rather than to continue to drive it.

I just rebuilt an M20 engine for my 87 325e. Parts cost around 600-800 but if you do it all yourself, the money you save on labor makes it well worth it. It's awesome to see these engines apart, and could be a great father/son project. Make sure you by a Bently manual.
