1998 Audi A6 Automatic

Please, Please could somebody help me?
I bought an Audi A6 7 weeks ago.
The other night driving home a battery light came on, then the ABS light then all of the lights on the dash board came on. A beeping noise started. Then all of the lights went out. Including my head lights!
I got the car home and onto my driveway.
The next day I managed to start the car with no problems at all to get my 6 yr old son to school. I went to tescos, but on my way there the same thing happened. RE: all the lights coming on, I tried driving around to charge the battery but it wasn't charging and then the car just stopped!
Within the last 7 wks of having the car, I have called the garage where I bought the car for £2000 (and my old M-reg BMW which needed some work doing on it) because it wasn't turning over straight away. Sometimes it would take me 2-3 times to turn the engine over!
Someone gave me a jump start with leads the other day at tescos, but as soon as I drove off the monitor showing me the voltage of the battery started going straight back down again.
I made it the quarter of a mile back home!
I don't know what to do. The owner of the garage where I got the car said if I lived closer then he'd come and have a look. But because I live about 10 miles away -He can't!
Do I have any rights considering I got it only 7 wks ago?
He said its prob the alternator and will cost me about £200 which I can't afford.
Please could someone help. I am desperate.
Many anticipated thanks.

Hi there,

I would be thinking that the alternator is at fault and also the battery may well be over due for replacement, I presume that there is no warranty on this car, if not the garage has no obligation to help, but we are talking about used car salesmen.
One would expect that they would do the right thing by you, but if not do you have a mobile mechanic that operates in the vicinity? This may be an option.
