Engine/ handbrake light stays on

Hi,
I have a peugeot 205 GTX, with about 37, ooo miles, 1996, Lately the handbrake/engine light has been staying on whilst I drive, Is this a major concern or can it be repaired cheaply as I am not planning on keeping the car for much longer?

Check around the handbrake and see if you can find the wire to the switch that is probably reporting the errant handbrake useage. Disconnect and test the switch with an ohm meter to determine if the switch is defective.
