I have a 2001 Beetle 2.0 with auto transmission. Bought the car used 5 monthes ago, and it has 30K mi. Transmission failed, check engine light flashing and reverse not working as well as anything above first gear. Towed to dealer, he scanned and determined trashed. I had replaced with used, at independent shop with used transmission with also approx. 30K mi. On it. After replacement the codes that came up upon failure ( 0720 and 0740) were still scanned and check engine light remained on. Independent shop that replaced transmission wasn't able to clear codes. Back to to dealer to clear codes, which they did and didn't find anything wrong. A few days and less than 100 miles later, check engine light comes back and remains on, scanned and code 0740, "torque converter current malfunction" iis back. Transmission sounds fine and car runs fine. Is there a procedure that needs to be followed to really clear this fault code, such as driving for an hour after clearing code? Or is this code a real problem, and possibly the caiuse of the initial transmission failure? Dealer just interested in $109 for scans, rather than real answers. Presently afraid to drive car. Would appreciate any ideas or similar experiences.

Sounds like it is time to do some serious electrical testing. Probably need to gain access to the TCM (trans control module) and test the wiring to be sure it is good. First be sure fuses 7, 11, 15 and 31 are good
