My 2000 Pathfinder has 37K miles, 4 out of 7 days, the first time you start the car it makes a strange sound from the engine. It last for about 20 seconds. What could it be? My husband ever hears it.

Is the neighbor missing any cats? Cats will sometimes crawl up in the engine area to get warmth. DOes it sound like:

MEEEEOOOOOWWWW!

Okay, seriously can you get a closer description?

What size motor also?

No it is no a cat under the car.I don;t what size engine(6 Cyclinder). The noise only lasts only for about 30 to 60 seconds. I had the timing belt-chain and tensioner replaced about 3 months ago at dealer.
The sound is like tapping, and it only does the first time you start the car.I have made appointments to take car back to dealer, but than the noise stops. It happens maybe 4 out of 7 days. My husbdand is ill, and I take care of car repairs. Someone said it may be lifters? I just donlt know what to do. I have made appointment to take to dealer in 3 days, and leave car, maybe it will make the sound.

I change the oil every 3 months. Someone today at work said it may be bad lifters. The engine is VG33E.I read something about Nissan Service Bullentin #04017 dated 2/6/04, about this engine having bad lifters, I would if it would be covered under warranty.

That was where I was working towards, the lifter noise. Low oil level can cause this or thin oil can cause this. You can call the dealer and ask if they will cover it. I don't know the engine warranty they offer. I wouldn't wait too long in the event it is 7 years on the warranty.
