So this car was cooling great with no issues whatsoever, there was a thermostat code though, but anyways while I was on my way to pick up my my wife before I got there I lost the A/C for some reason it stopped cooling it wasn't overheating or anything like that. So when I get there I turn the car off waited a few minutes and then open the reservoir and it was full of water, checked the A/C compressor and it would turn with hands freely but was not running anymore when A/C was on. Drove it back after 2 hours and kept A/C on in case it started to cool and 5 minutes later it did, would be freezing few seconds and then flat for few seconds. Thermostat was between 1/4 and close to half, but not where it should at 50%. Got home left it running until the temperature needle reached half way where it shows and the A/C stayed cool, checked Freon level and was good but added a bit anyways. Fan clutch heard it lock around that temperature so I know it worked. Freon level around 40, and no overheating or noises. Would a stuck open/closed thermostat cause that?

Hi,

The engine cooling system thermostat does nothing with the AC unless the engine is overheating. Then it will shut down the A/C.

When you said Freon level is around 40, are you referring to the low pressure side PSI? If so, what was the outside temperature when you checked it?

Here is a link that you may find of interest:

Let me know.

Okay, that is where it should be. Did you happen to get the high side reading as well? Also, is it working now or has the issue returned? At 75° F, low pressure should be between 35 and 40, so it was a bit low.

Let me know.

No, didn't read the high side. I will do tomorrow. It was working at optimal engine temperatures when I got home, so I will try. Tomorrow

If it is working properly, it may have simply been low on Freon. See if it changes.

But, if it was low why would it all for minutes then on my way back it would cool for 3 seconds and not cool for 3 seconds? Had a mind of its own.

When it was doing that, was the compressor still engaging? If it was jumping back and forth between temperature (working and then not) are you sure it isn't an air temperature actuator issue?

Also, there could be an issue with the control module. Can you scan the can bus system if there is a break down in communication?
