Reduced engine power when the A/C is on

My A/C works fine but I've noticed in the last several years that when it's running it cuts the car's performance dramatically. When stopped at a light, the acceleration is horrible. When the A/C is off the performance is perfect. Is this just normal with age or should I get it looked at?

Hello,

Just about all vehicles will see some performance decline with the A/C running. Vehicles with smaller engines may be more noticeable. Especially the initial acceleration.

Does it idle poorly when the A/C is running?

One of the parts that controls the idle speed under load is the idle air control valve. The job of this valve is the adjust the engine idle as it has any type of load from an accessory like the A/C. When the A/C gets turned on the valve allows more air flow to counter the load. A dirty valve might not perform as well. So, it might be a good idea to clean it.

Here are a couple of helpful articles:

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

My idle is fine. It's an acceleration issue. I can't take off like I can when the A/C is off. For an older car it has pretty good acceleration when not running the A/C.

A good step would be to clean out the throttle body and the related components. That way if dirty component was the reason you would be able to eliminate it.

I have seen many 4 cylinder vehicles with similar issues and there is not any solutions as the compressor just puts too much load on the engine.
