What tools are needed to rebuild the transmission in my car, my father-inlaw is a mechanic and knows how to do it but said I have to buy the tools because he does not have them anymore.

To do this job there are many specialized tools that would cost more then having the transmission rebuilt by someone else.

If I were you just take it to someone that can do the job.
