Replacing battery literally four days ago. My papa came over and got the battery replaced and tightened the belts (both, serpentine and alternator belt)? I am not exactly sure what they are. He got those tightened and there’s a hose on top of the motor that has clamps on it kind of next to the battery, I am not sure what that hose is called and what it does, but he put just a little bit of gasoline in that hose and he got it to start. We drove it fine those four days, it started perfectly, everything. This evening to go to the store we tried to start it and it cranks, but does not turn over. Checked battery cables, they are fine. Belts are tight but we were going to go tomorrow to get new ones because he said they needed to be replaced but cannot unless we figure out why it will not start! It has gas in it, everything. What could this be?

I am sorry about how I described this. I am a woman and I know absolutely nothing about cars at all. Please help me!

No problem, can you tell me if the security light is flashing when you try to crank it over? If not it sounds like the PCM #16 or fuel pump relay is not working. Here is a guide to help you test them and the location of the relays. I have also included the engine wiring diagrams so you can see how then system works.

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

We had got it to start, turns out it was not registering it had gas in it.

We replaced the alternator belt last night because it came clear off the van. It started fine and drove fine for about thirty minutes. We turned it off twice and it started back up. This morning, went to take my husband to work and it would not start. It cranks and sometimes it will turn over but within two seconds it shuts off. Battery is brand new and didn’t drive it far at all when the belt came off. Maybe 500 feet back down my road to my driveway parked it and turned it off. Please help me. I am so confused! It is something almost everyday with this van!

It sounds like a crankshaft sensor or the fuel pump is going out. To be sure when the van stalls out shut the key off and without cranking the engine over turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump in the tank. Please let me know.

My papa and my mom's boyfriend said it sounds like the fuel pump is having an issue. Or an electrical problem. But my papa said there is not much to it when it comes to electrical, so it would have to be a fuel pump issue. They both told me that I could put some gas in one of the two hoses under the hood (I guess it goes to the intake?) And get it started that way. My papa did it before after he had replaced the battery. But of course he said that is just diagnosing the problem, not fixing it. Would that at least start it and get me where I need to go?

I have heard the fuel pump pumping before. A few weeks ago when we were having this issue and my papa came over, I heard the fuel pump making the noise like it is pumping. I have not really paid attention to see if I have heard it now because I do not want to keep starting it and run the battery down and ruin the battery again. If I keep trying to start it, would it eventually catch and start up? Or would that ruin the battery? I just do no know what to do! My papa said that the only issue should have been the alternator belt. Replace it and all should be fine. But it is not!

No problem, the battery will be okay you might need to have a trickle charger on it. Please turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over to see if the fuel pump runs of about five seconds. Please let me know.

Well, after doing some troubleshooting on the phone with my Papa and my mother’s boyfriend, they both said it sounds like the fuel pump is bad. So my father came and picked it up on a rollback and is going to get it fixed. IF that’s the only thing that is wrong. I will keep you updated.
