I drive my dakota about 15 to 20 miles before the automatic transmission gets stuck in one gear (maybe second gear). If I pull over and shut off the engine and then restart. I can then drive another ten or so miles before it gets stuck in gear again. This just keeps happening. The transmission does not slip and reverse always works. When the problem occured my check engine light came on. Please dont tell me that I need a new transmission

We need the code.

It may be valve body but it needs to be confirmed. The pan will have to come down and look for metal, if it is there, yes, the trans will have to come out.

Have you serviced it regularly?
