Where is this part that you're calling a heater bypass?

It comes out of the lower intake manifold near the tensioner and is just a right angle plastic piece

Those are plastic elbows for the liquid filled belt tensioner. You will have to remove the tensioner and pieces of those 2 elbows will likely break off inside the block but can be easily removed with a hook of some type. Just make sure you get all the pieces out.

A crack in one of those would cause all coolant to leak out?

Of course. It's quite common.
