Hi,

The camshaft is made of cast iron. They can wear and even break. Common symptoms would include an engine misfire, loud tapping noise from the camshaft area, metal debris in the engine oil, and so on.

By nature, if the camshaft is still installed in the cylinder head, it will be hard to turn. So, don't be overly concerned if that is the issue.

Next, look for issues such as worn lobes or scored journals. These could indicate an internal failure that has damaged the camshaft.

As far s the blue marks, that could be from heat. If there is a lack of lubrication to the cam and lifters, heat will be extreme.

Last, the only way to confirm the camshaft is truly bad is to use a micrometer to determine if each of the camshaft lobes is within the manufacturer's specs.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
