Maximum amount that heads can be resurfaced without causing problems?

Car was run very hot.I am accessing block now,but machine shop said that they will have to take off about .030.

Please include the engine size when asking questions about engines. If it is an overhead cam engine, it is never okay to resurface the heads. They have to be heated and straightened, otherwise the cam journals will still be out-of-line. In cases like that it is usually less expensive to just get different heads. Straightening is typically reserved for rare or expensive heads.
