When I take my car out of drive it starts to rev up. It goes from idle in drive to 3 rpms when taken out of drive. What is going on?

Could be a vacuum leak or the idle control motor is malfunctioning

Is this expensive to fix? Can I do it myself?

Look around for any hoses off while running or listen for a whistling noise.

The iac motor, if bad, is about 140 and 1 hour in labor.

Lets try to find the failure first.

I will be able to check this tonight when I get home from work. I work about 50 miles from home. Is it save to drive on the highway? What if there is a whistling noise? What if there isn't?

If it whistles, then there is a vacuum leak. If it does not, then there is something else wrong.

Let someone help you if you are not sure.
