My engine sometimes knocks at startup...what could the problem be and how much would it cost approx. to fix?

WRX engines between 1997 and 1999 are the only engine where i have heard a similar problem it turns out to be a piston slap. This only happens on cold start up and when the engine is at warm running temp the noise disappears as the piston has expanded slightly with heat which makes a better fit.
