Hello,

I have a 2001 Jaguar S-type 3.0 cylinder. I have 1419969 miles on it and my car runs so smooth. Recently, if I drive my car for about 10 minutes the car begins to overheat when on local streets. As soon as I enter a freeway and remain at a constant speed it cools off. It’s been happening for about 3 weeks now and I don't know what to do. If I try to accelerate while it’s above the half point line, it either stutters or makes a scraping sound. Once it’s found a smooth pace, I am cruising. My check engine light has been on and off for about 1 year and a half. I finally went to Auto zone and the two codes they gave me were:

P0420 Catalyst efficiency below threshold Bank and
P1388 Manufacturer Specific DTC.

What do you think the problem is? Is it safe to continue to drive it? How much do you think repairs would cost?

P0420 could be a clogged convrter or exhaust has pieces of the broken converter bed lodged in the pipes or mufflers, this might cause an overheat, also check the cooling fan(s), do the work?

Thanks for the response. My fans work fine. They start working 6 minutes into the car ride. More when I stop and go. I don't know what to do. The car ride today was fine until I slowed down to park then the dial went all the way to H then back to the middle. Any reccomendations on what I should do? And also one day driving my dash light up like a christmas tree and displayed "traction control fault" and then went away.I'm confused.

First thing to take care of is the P0420 code and related problem=the catalytic converter MUST be checked, if too much exaust backpressure is building. It may cause an overheat. It may also completely clog the exhaust, cusing an eventual no start problem.
