battery was dead, old, wouldn't hold a charge so we got a new one to try

the starter could be engaging because of the start motor itself.

So how can I at least get that negative terminal attached with out getting a shock? Its a side mount battery and requires a socket to get it screwed in.

not until the issue with the starter is resolved.

you can try to find the fuse for the remote and remove it to see if that is the issue but i doubt it.

Is there some way I can test the starter myself or do I have to get it towed to a shop?
