Dear car experts,

Something strange happend to me and my audi a4b5 yesterday. I was waiting behind a few cars at a stoplight, and as I was trying to exallerate from first gear, a "cunk" sound came from the front of the car. It didnt make the same sound like it does when it stalls. My heart was pounding, but when I turned the car off and on again to move on, everything worked just fine. The gears even feel like they go in easier.I can also move between gears while the car is off and parked. I havent tried it while driving yet. It is a manual quattro. Do you have an idea of what happened here?
Thank you very much for any assistance,
Ines Wolf

It could be a bad axle or a transmission problem. First you should attend to it immediately as it could pose a safety issue. I am giving you a walk through diagnostic that covers most of the safety issues. If the all checks out take the car to a transmission repair shop for diagnosis.

That kind of sound coming from the front end can be so many things it is hard to say. However it is not something that cannot be left without investigation as it could pose a safety issue. It could be a bad front axle or there could be a problem in the transmision. I am giving you a walk through diagnostic to start you through the process of elimination. Go through it as it will cover most of the safety related issues. If all checks out I would take the car to a transmisssion repair facility. Do not take it to a regualar repaier shop as trnsmissions are hard to work on and take expertise and rewuire special tools to diangose and repair correclty. AAMCO charges too much. So use the internet to find a tranmssion repair shop near you.
The link for the diagnostic is below. Just use it to get to the page;
